Interview with Muhammet Guler, an Erasmus+ student from Turkey

Muhammet Guler is a student from Turkey, who is enjoying his Erasmus+ exchange at our faculty.

1. When did you decide to do an Erasmus+ exchange?
l decided to be an Erasmus+ exchange student at the beginning of this year (2015).

2. Why did you decide to study abroad as an exchange student?
l wanted to improve my personal skills and get to know new cultures and languages.

3. How long are you staying in Slovenia?
I am staying in Slovenia for 10 months. I arrived at the end of September 2015.

4. What do you study?
I am studying Tourism.

5. Why did you choose Slovenia? Where there any special reasons why you chose Faculty of Commercial and Business Science for your Erasmus period abroad?
l chose Slovenia, because it’s a special country located in middle of the Europe. The nature is beautiful and as l am doing some extreme sports this country is perfect for them (paragliding, skiing etc.). The education system is much better than in lots of others countries. It’s also worth mentioning that some other Turkish students who were on Erasmus exchange, here, at the Faculty of Commercial and Business Science shared so many great experiences with me and that helped me on my decision as well.

6. Do you have any scholarship from your home university, to cover your expenses during your Erasmus stay?
l have a scholarship of 400,00 EUR per month, which is not covering all of my expenses.

7. Have you found complicated all the previous and post paperwork needed?

No, actually it was easy to find.

8. Are you satisfied with the lectures that you were/are attending?

Yes, I am satisfied.

9. What are the things that you like most at our faculty?
l liked everything at your faculty. I didn’t have any bad experience yet. Faculty staff is really nice and kind.

10. What do you think about Slovenian teaching education in general?
l would like to study in Slovenia after my Erasmus+ exchange. l like the teaching system very much.

11. What about the education system, do you found differences to the system in Turkey?
Education system is totally different than in Turkey. In Turkey we have to take 20 exams every semester. Maybe if they would do an exams reorganization, it would be more alike.

12. Is there anything in the Slovenian teaching education system that you would like to bring back home to Turkey ?
l would like bring back to Turkey the homework system.

13. Was it hard to get used to English language at the beginning? Are you getting used easily to the Slovenian language?
At the beginning it was hard, but after a while, l get used to English language. I am also trying to get used to the Slovenian (smile).

14. Was it easy to you to find accommodation?
It was not easy, especially as all dorms were full already. But with some help, l found a room in a flat in Maribor after 4 days of searching.

15. In regards with accommodation, did your faculty help you?
It was not impossible to get help from my faculty.

16. How do you find out the Erasmus+ environment in Slovenia? Are there many exchange students?
It is kind country for an Erasmus+ exchange and its really good opportunity to met people from all over the world. Here is also a lot of other Erasmus+ students.

17. How is the Erasmus+ atmosphere in Slovenia?
Erasmus+ atmosphere in Slovenia is perfect. l already visited some other countries, but Slovenia is different which is good for an exchange students.

18. Do you get to know Slovenian students? How?
All of Slovenian students speak English, which makes it easier to get to know students from Slovenia.

19. How many people (that you can trust to and call at any time) did you meet?
I met around 200 Erasmus+ students in Maribor, l am in contact with 50 of them and l think I can trust like 20 of them (smile).

20. What do you think of Slovenia in general?
Slovenia is one of the most amazing country in Europe. I already seen every part of Slovenia. It is not expensive here, but it is also not cheap. Expenses are kind of average. People here are respectful to each other and most of them are friendly. Weather in Slovenia is also good, because till now it was mostly sunny.

21. From the point of view of personal experience, how do you consider your stay in Slovenia?
Everything in Slovenia is quite good. I think life conditions are better than in lots of other countries.

22. Which places would you recommend to visit in Slovenia?
There is one amazing place – Soča river valley which is good for hiking, rafting, flying etc. The nature is really beautiful and there is also a lot of historical and touristic places. For skiing l definitely recommend Pohorje. There are also some a must see touristic places, like Bled lake, Bohinj lake and Drava river.

23. So far, would you consider the possibility of living abroad for a longer period of time?
Since l came here l always think the same thought – I need to figure out some possibilities to stay for a longer period of time. However I still did not figure it out how I can make this happen. And the last part living in sLOVEnia its enthusiastic totally different than my culture. I fell in love with this city (Maribor) and this country.
